The City of Los Angeles has authorized LADWP sewer system customers to use data from private water sub-meters in the calculation of their sewer service charges. the program is completely optional, but done at the owners expense. The program requires that the plumbing of a building is to be configured in to two seperate distribution lines, one line where the water drains to the sewer, and one where the water does not.
Currently LADWP customers are charged a Sewer Service Charge (SSC) on their water bill, this charge is estimated by the LADWP based on the your average water usage, including the water that you use for your irrigation or to fill your pool. It is estimated that about 70% of the water a family uses goes towards irrigation.
By installing a water sub-meter that seperates the water to your house, (the water that drains to the sewer), and the water to your irrigation, (does not drain to the sewer), The LADWP will charge you sewer fees only for the water that goes to the house, and not for irrigation, generating substantial savings on your sewer bill.
